2021 Home Design Trends

This past year has been unlike any other, to say the least, and it’s driving new housing design trends. Indeed, the pandemic has changed many things, especially how we feel about and use our homes. Home is where the work is done, where the lessons are learned, where the food is cooked, where the entertainment is had, and where the heart is. With that in mind, let’s dive into the 2021 interior design forecast, which features innovative trends emerging in homes this year. GRANDMILLENIAL DESIGN Because of the pandemic and its consequential quarantine, 2020 saw an increase in nostalgia when it comes to interior design. We wanted to make our homes more comforting in any way possible. This includes bringing back old patterns and cozy details such as floral wallpaper, antique paintings and crocheted throw blankets – little things to remind us of Grandma’s house. Moving forward, design experts predict we will continue to combine the old and new – the classical and the modern. Many people might lean towards authentic, meaningful designs that will surpass fashion or one specific style and instead reflect a person’s self-expression and personalization.

SUSTAINABILITY IN THE HOUSE This year might just be the transformative one we’ve all been waiting for, a year that will determine a new age in developing sustainability in all fields of design, even the home. Many of us are aware that it’s time to be more conscious consumers. So, with more brands offering innovative materials and production methods, interior design will prioritize ethical and sustainable home aspects in 2021. Everyday elements like fabric, furniture, chinaware and lighting are all on a path to be natural, recycled and reusable.

HOUSEPLANTS GALORE If you’re active on social media then you’ve probably realized that houseplants have never been more popular or fashionable as they currently are. With so much time spent indoors these days, it’s only natural to want some form of plant life nearby to remind you that there is life beyond the interior of your home. Along with being a beautiful statement piece that is vibrant and colorful, houseplants bring fresh air into your home that can give a sense of well-being.

“CDC APPROVED” FEATURES The global pandemic of 2020 has changed a lot of things, to put it mildly. As a result, we are at an all-time high of practicing good hygiene. A big design trend in 2021 will be the implementation of hands-free technology to limit surface touching which leads to the spread of a virus in the home. This will include replacing all high-touch fixtures in the home, such as light switches, water faucets, soap dispensers, doorway knobs, and anything else that can easily be switched to touch-free technology. Not only does this help to slow the spread of germs, but it also will be a modern and sleek interior design option.

PANTONE COLORS Pantone recently announced the 2021 colors of the year and, as always, we have long been looking forward to it. This year’s colors are Ultimate Grey and Illuminating, colors that both complement each other and come together to give a bright, cheerful energy to your home. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us the resilience and hope that we all need. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACES Since March, our homes have effectively become multi-functional spaces in which we live our lives almost entirely. During this new year, homes will transform to become a “blended space”, with ever-changing zones for a variety of needs. Designers have already been reimagining furniture to create multi-purpose pieces that can adapt to different uses. For example, a traditional bar table used for happy hours at home can now expand into a work desk with built in storage and a charging station. This design trend can help eliminate clutter and empower you to make the most out of the space in your home.
